Practice balancing equations tonight and make sure you know how to recognize the different types of reactions. Call me if you have any questions (no later than 9pm, please).

You don’t need to bring in your cupcakes until Thursday (although you do need to hand in your Cupcakes prelab).

We are going to put together our cupcake periodic table on Thursday the 20th. Everyone needs to bring in 2 dozen cupcakes (one cake mix makes 2 dozen cupcakes — hmmmm..mmm there are some conversions we could do here!) DO NOT FROST THE CUPCAKES! We need to frost them according to their placement on our periodic table. We will frost them in class and…..eat them (ruining our lunch!)

We will have our final chemistry test (wipe that tear away) on the 18th. The test will be on balancing chemical reactions (you need to know how to write equations from names for this — be sure to review) and on types of reactions.

Contact me with any questions you may have. Let me know if you want to schedule extra help.

If you are re-taking the last chemistry test (naming formulas, writing compounds, and mole conversions), you need to see me to schedule a time to take the re-take.

The re-take will consist of the following:

  •  5 writing formula questions (I give you the names, you write the formulas)
  • 5 naming formula questions (I give you the formulas, you write the names of the compounds)
  • 5 conversion problems (convert from number of particles to moles –or moles to number of particles; and convert from mass (grams) to moles — or moles to mass (grams))

You will have the following for your re-take:

  • a periodic table
  • the Naming Compounds Flowchart (know how to use it)
  • one 3×5 index card with any notes that you would like to put on it

Contact me with any questions.

Read pages 370-373.

Questions: page 377 #6-10 (skip 8f)

Balancing Equations packet: Some of these equations are difficult. At a minimum, you should be able to show me your “atom counts” for each side of the equation and one attempt to balance an element.

Read pages 365 through 369.

Answer the following questions on pages 369-370: #1 a and b, #2 a and b, #4, #5.

TEST: Chemical Names, Formulas, Conversions (including mole conversions)

Lab: Counting by Measuring Mass

Element 117 has moved from the realm of theory to actually being produced. Read about it in this New York Times article.
